Who is Jesus? Meet Him at Malta's Full Gospel Praise Centres?

Ichthus (ancient Christian symbol)In the early days of the Christian church, those who followed Jesus Christ were persecuted by the Roman authorities. They had to meet in secret, and developed secret ways of identifying themselves to other followers. One of their secret symbols was the Sign of the Fish, because the Greek word for "fish" was "ICHTHUS", and the Greek letters of this word were the initials of the words JESUS, CHRIST, OF GOD, SON, and SAVIOUR

JESUS

This name, given to this particular man when he was born just over 2000 years ago,
is the same as the Hebrew word "Joshua" or "Yeshua" and means "God saves"

CHRIST

This means "Anointed one". The Hebrew equivalent is "Messiah".
Anointed for what? - see "Saviour" below...

OF GOD

Jesus Christ came from God - but He was God. Although born as a normal human child, and therefore fully human with all normal human needs of food, rest, and so on, Jesus was also fully God. Check out what the Bible says about Him - and see that what really upset the Jewish religious leaders, which led to charges of blasphemy against Him and eventually to His execution, was that he did what only God could do and also accepted recognition as God.

  • "Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
    "... that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins", He said to the paralytic,
    "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home" (Mark 2: 7-10).

  • "My Lord and my God!" said Thomas when he met the risen Jesus (John 20: 28).

SON

Jesus was born as a Jew, in Bethlehem, the home town of David, their most famous king.  Jesus' mother Mary was a descendant of King David, and hence, so was Jesus.  He was described sometimes as "Son of Man", sometimes as "Son of David".  But He was also Son of God (see "Of God" above).

SAVIOUR

Jesus came among us,
  • not just to teach us about God and how to live (although He did that);
  • not just to heal some sick people and even raise some dead people to life again (although He did that too);
  • not just to deliver some who were oppressed by demons or evil spirits (although He did that too);

but to save us from our sins. For thousands of years, God had taught the Israelites that they and all mankind were sinners who needed His forgiveness, but that, to "atone" for the sins, a sacrifice was required. Eventually, God provided the ultimate sacrifice: He came to earth Himself, and gave up His own human life as a sacrifice for our sins. Then, to prove that "the price was paid" completely, He rose from the dead.
